Preface Uncertainty … not being able to plan or to make any decisions is terribly frustrating for everybody. Yet, this has been the case for many of us since the outbreak of the coronavirus and its global spreading during 2020. Now, one year later, it has had a huge impact on our lives and societies. At the time of writing, the period of uncertainty is prolonged and our endurance is still being tested, as mutants of the virus continue to plague us. Let’s hope that the vaccines will prove to be effective and can bring some relief and a more positive perspective. At the same time, our thoughts are with those who became victim of this virus.

One of the consequences of the coronavirus crisis was also that more than 150(!) international piano competitions that had been scheduled for 2020, could not take place and had to be cancelled or postponed. Some competition organisers tried to adapt to the new situation and changed the format of their event. The introduction of online stages to the traditional competitions seemed to offer a temporary solution. Although this has some advantages in the current situation, there are also several special aspects that need to be properly considered and well-defined. More about this on pages 32-33. For 16 years, AAF has been issuing this annual catalogue, and this edition is the first one that we do not print. It is much better for the environment. Moreover, this digital publication enables us and the competition organisers to make adjustments and updates even during the year. This is indeed an important advantage especially now, as we still have to deal with uncertainties and restrictions. As usual, the AAF catalogue contains a huge amount of information. It is inevitable that some competition details will change and will be no longer valid, even within days after this catalogue is published. If it concerns an important adjustment, we will be able to accommodate this and we can thus keep the catalogue precise and up-to-date. Naturally, to keep it manageable, we do not intend to launch a revised edition every single day, but we may very well consider to do so once a month. In order to keep track of everything, the successive publications of this catalogue within one year will be clearly numbered and will always include an overview of all the changes and additions. There are thousands of pianists who keenly follow the competitions and who are looking for opportunities to perform and take part. They need to be well-informed. This catalogue can be freely downloaded and shared. Another great advantage is that there are many links in this catalogue: by clicking on a website address, the reader can easily jump to the corresponding website, and can thus check the latest info there as well. I hope you will enjoy this publication and that it will be useful for everyone with an interest in the world of piano competitions!

* the very first international piano competition was the Anton Rubinstein Competition in St. Petersburg, 1890. It was held five times at five-year intervals (and in different cities). * only those competitions have been counted which are international and which are open for piano. Competitions that have various age categories have been counted as one. * amateur competitions have not been included. Neither have 'mixed' competitions been included (where pianists compete against other instrumentalists or singers).

Many competitions …

From the graph on the opposite page, it can be seen that there was a strong increase of competitions until the year 2002. It looks like an exponential growth. People spoke of an explosion of competitions.

Peak

The peak was reached in 2002: in that year not less than 336 international piano competitions (for solo pianists) took place*.

Interestingly, after 2002, the amount of competitions decreased and lingered around 300 for many years. An explanation for this could be a certain level of saturation and also the effect of the economical crisis. However, in 2017, a large amount of new competitions emerged and the number suddenly jumped to a new record of nearly 350 international piano competitions taking place within that same year. Since not all competitions are annual, the total number of existing international piano competitions is much higher. It is a fair estimate that there are at the moment more than 900 international piano competitions worldwide. With some 340 competitions being held within a year, one might think that there are also 340 first prize winners. Actually, this number lies again higher. Although the first prize is not always awarded, there are also quite a few competitions that employ various age categories, especially in France and Italy. Each of these age groups can produce several winners. There has even been an international piano competition with 26 different categories each year! Competitions in Asia can also have many classes (more than 30!) at different levels. Even more prize winners With so many competitions, the pianists have ample choice to enter the event which they consider the most attractive or the best suited, in terms of dates, location and repertoire. In 2009, there was a pianist who managed to take part in 16 international competitions within that year. The total number of applications was even higher. In 2020, the number of competitions dropped dramatically, as more than 150 competitions were cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis. It is surprising that more than 130 could still be held. Many of these, however, were online competitions. With the sudden rise of these online competitions, pianists have still more opportunities to apply. They send their best recordings to different places. This is not necessarily a positive development. Some remarks and observations on pages 32-33. *: these numbers are based on the research Gustav Alink did all over the world, focusing on the international competitions. There might still be other competitions that have been overlooked, in which case the numbers are even higher. Ample choice

2020

The year 2020 would have been an amazing year for pianists and piano lovers: many major international piano competitions were on the calendar. But then, the virus came. The corona crisis that followed had a huge impact and turned everything upside down. From March 2020, most of the competition organisers were compelled to postpone their events. Those who were having their competitions in January or February, were very lucky. In January, the classical section of the UNISA competition in Pretoria (South Africa) was won by Evgeny Konnov, who had already captured the first prize in 11 other international piano competitions! Jiale Li from China won the first Gurwitz Competition in San Antonio (Texas, USA). Elisabeth Waglechner was awarded the first prize as well as the audience prize in the piano section of the Mozart Competition in Salzburg. An impressive jury of 12, including Abdel-Rahman El-Bacha and Pascal Rogé, were present in Taipei to judge the first Maestro Competition. The danger of the virus had already become so apparent that all safety instructions had to be followed and many precautions had to be taken. The competition could still take place, though with fewer contestants, as many of the 36 selected contestants had already withdrawn or were unable to come. Among the other competitions that could still take place in the first quarter of 2020 were the ones in Istanbul and Hilton Head (USA). But then, the lockdowns came into effect, and the Liszt Competition in Utrecht (Netherlands) had to be cancelled, just a few days before it would start … Also the 2 nd international AAF Conference could not be held. During the rest of the year, more than 150 international piano competitions were cancelled or postponed, including the Queen Elisabeth competition, the Beethoven competition in Vienna, the competition in Montreal, the Arthur Rubinstein competition, Sydney, Cleveland, Glasgow, Munich and the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. In the Summer, there was some hope again, and the Utrecht Liszt Competition announced new dates, but unfortunately it could not happen. In spite of the difficult circumstances, there were a few competitions that could still take place, such as the MozArte Competition in Aachen (Germany), the CLAMO Competition in Murcia (Spain), the Fausto Zadra Competition in Abano Terme (Italy) and the Jeune Chopin Competition in Martigny (Switzerland), where Martha Argerich was on the jury and even gave a solo performance in front of a very small, select audience. Other competitions changed the format and held the preliminary rounds or even the entire competition online, such as the one in Ettlingen. The Busoni and Enescu competitions had the preliminary round online and will continue in 2021. New online competitions emerged such as the EUPLAYY Competition and the Harmonium OnlinePlus Competition (Armenia). Piano Cleveland launched the Virtu(al)oso Competition offering substantial support to all 30 contestants. Steinway&Sons collaborated intensely by arranging recording facilities, also for the 93 candidates for the Busoni Competition.

In October, the postponed competition in Orléans (France) could just complete the live final stage before another lockdown was imposed.

2021

It is impossible to predict what will happen in 2021 … Naturally, we all hope that the vaccines will be effective against the coronavirus and that this, together with all the necessary precautions in the various countries, will gradually result in our return to a more normal life. It seems, though, that this may still take quite some time. Until then, we will have to live with many restrictions and all related inconveniences. Many important piano competitions which could not be held in 2020, have been rescheduled for 2021: the Queen Elisabeth competition in Brussels, the Beethoven competition in Vienna, the competition in Montreal, the Arthur Rubinstein competition in Tel Aviv, Cleveland, Warsaw Chopin …, but as long as the coronavirus is threatening us, it remains to be seen whether these competitions can indeed take place. At the time of writing, several of them have already been modified: the Beethoven and the Arthur Rubinstein competitions will have the first stages online and plan to have only the final stage as a live event. Other competitions will not have the final stage with orchestra, but with Chamber Music instead (Bremen, Düsseldorf - Schumann ). Montreal has decided to convert the entire competition into an online event of two rounds. The preselection stage of the Chopin Competition in Warsaw has been postponed from April to July. Apart from the competitions that moved from 2020 to 2021, several other high-profile competitions had already been planned for 2021, such as the Cliburn , Dublin, Prague, Leeds, Budapest Liszt , Monte-Carlo, Calgary Honens , Shenzhen and Hamamatsu. To be on the safe side, the organisers of the Cliburn and Dublin already moved their events forward to 2022. So did the organizers of the competitions in Tbilisi and Darmstadt ( Chopin ). Other competitions that could not take place in 2020, will return in 2023 (Sydney, Glasgow) or are on hold, as the organizers do not know yet when the next event can be held (Oberlin, Leuze-en-Hainaut). Meanwhile, the Sydney Competition will have an online edition in 2021, to which all the pianists who were selected for the 2020 competition are invited. Also many of the other competitions that already completed the preselection phase last year, will give all selected pianists the right to participate this year: Montreal, Vienna, Tel Aviv, Brussels, Cleveland, Bremen, Zwickau, Salt Lake City … As a consequence, the age of some of the contestants might be one year higher than the usual age limit for these competitions. When looking at the calendars on pages 17-24, we can see many great competitions, but we have to realise that many of the dates might still change. As long as the coronavirus crisis persists, more competitions will be cancelled or postponed again. AAF is following the situation day by day and will publish any changes in the next edition of this catalogue, while the latest updates can also be found on the AAF website. (www.alink-argerich.org)

Disclaimer Worldwide, more than 900 international piano competitions exist. AAF monitors most of them and has extensive documentation about them. This catalogue focuses on the 176 AAF member competitions and organisations and contains an enormous amount of details. While utmost care has been taken to present accurate information in this catalogue, AAF cannot assume responsibility for any inconvenience caused by ill-reading, mistake, unfortunate formulation or omission. Neither can AAF be held responsible for the content of the individual competition pages. Especially in these uncertain times, there are frequently changes and it will therefore happen that some of the details are no longer valid. As this is a digital publication, an updated edition can be issued relatively easily. Its number and date will be clearly indicated in the next publications. While we try to keep this catalogue as up-to-date as possible, the reader may also check AAF’s website for latest news and announcements: www.alink-argerich.org (updated every week). AAF’s website also informs about other piano competitions, not necessarily affiliated with AAF. For additional information, assistance or complaints, feel free to contact AAF at any time (mail@alink-argerich.org or aafout@yahoo.com).

N.B. Competition organisers sometimes decide to extend the application deadline, hoping for more pianists to apply. This is then usually announced at the last moment, so it is advisable to double-check the websites. Naturally, one should never count on this and always try to apply well on time. The organisers will appreciate it. At some competitions, two application deadlines are set (and even mentioned in the rules). Pianists who apply after the first deadline, are required to pay an additional “late application fee” (or “late processing fee” ). Other competitions try to stimulate pianists to apply earlier by mentioning a special “early-bird” deadline. The dates may also be different for applying online or by post. The Santa Cecilia Competition in Porto (Portugal) handles two different application deadlines: candidates for the main competition must apply earlier than the ones who wish to take part in one of the junior categories. This has to do with the preselection phase. NB: a few competitions require the pianists who have successfully passed the preliminary round, to apply or register again for the final stage. This is specially seen at competitions where the preliminary round is held online.

Competition calendars

On the next pages, competition calendars are given for the years 2021, 2022 and 2023. Application deadlines and age limits for contestants have been added. The age limits refer to the main competition or the highest category. In a few cases, there is a main division for pianists aged between 18 and 32, for example, and other categories, in which younger, but also older pianists may take part. In these cases, “all ages” has been written in the calendar. Y : indicates a special focus on (very) young pianists (see the special pages for juniors) +Y : indicates an additional category (categories) with lower age limits. In these cases, the number of categories has also been stated; - these competitions with a special focus on junior pianists have been singled out and grouped together on pages 26-29, where the age brackets for all the different categories can be seen more clearly; - sometimes, the competition is part of a festival. If participation in the entire festival (or master classes) is not mandatory, the period of the piano competition might be shorter; - at some competitions participants for the main competition (or senior category) may arrive later than participants in the junior categories; * an asterisk * in front of the application deadline indicates that it concerns a deadline in the year before, but the competition was postponed and the pianists who may take part have already been selected. (NB: in such a case, the age limits may also have slightly changed); - in this time of uncertainty, the dates of a competition may still change. Every effort has been made to have the information in these calendars as correct as possible at the time of publication; ~: whenever a tilde (‘~’) appears, precise dates or age limits were not known or unsure at the time of publication; the information was derived from the previous event; - it is difficult to show the dates of online competitions (see also pages 32-33); - the calendars for the years 2022 and 2023 list competitions that are expected to be held, based on their frequency, but it may very well happen that a competition is postponed.

AAF’s website is frequently updated. There, the competition calendars can also be found: in clear diagrams for each month, where it can readily be seen which competitions overlap and in which region of the world they are taking place, but also as a list in a PDF which can easily be downloaded.
