Preface The beginning of 2023, the war in Ukraine has been going on for almost a year already. Thousands of people have died. The homes and lives of millions others have been ruined. The massive destruction and devastation is appalling. I deeply wish that all this hostility will stop and that the world can be more peaceful again. We also still have to cope with the effects of climate change. It seems inevitable that we must adapt and make some changes to our life styles.

Fortunately, there is also positive news. The corona crisis has somewhat subdued. People can meet again, the concert halls are open and international travelling has been resumed. Competition organisers can also see the effect. Many pianists are applying to take part in live competitions again. However, quite a few competitions have retained the hybrid format: an online preliminary round (preselection based on videos), after which a much smaller number of contestants may take part in the following live rounds of the competition. This new edition of the AAF e-catalogue has been fully revised and updated for the year 2023. It contains again a lot of useful details about many international piano competitions worldwide. Several competitions that were held in 2022 are mentioned in the brief overview on page 6. It was an enormous achievement by Paloma O’Shea to have organised the Santander International Piano Competition at such high level for 50 years. Special tribute also to Tori Stødle (1942-2022) who realised six great editions of the Top of the World Competition in Tromsø (Norway), and to Manana Doijashvili (1947-2023), founder of the Tbilisi Int’l Piano Competition, which had its seventh edition last year. We have fond memories to them. In September 2022, the 2 nd international AAF Conference was held in collaboration with the Liszt Utrecht competition. It was very encouraging that more than 120 people attended this event: organisers from many different competitions as well as laureates, concert pianists and other representatives from all over the Piano World. A wide range of important issues and interesting topics were discussed. Apart from this, it was again a unique opportunity for many to exchange ideas and to make new contacts. As can be seen on page 7 and from the calendars (p. 18-25), many interesting competitions are coming up to be entered or attended. This e-catalogue and the AAF website are constantly updated in order to serve the pianists and assist the competition organisers.

International Piano Competitions Worldwide

The following graph shows how many international piano competitions have taken place within a given year.

* the very first international piano competition was the Anton Rubinstein Competition in St. Petersburg, 1890. It was held five times at five-year intervals (and in different cities). * only those competitions have been counted which are international and which are open for piano. Competitions that have various age categories have been counted as one. * amateur competitions have not been included. Neither have 'mixed' competitions been included (where pianists compete against other instrumentalists or singers).

Alink-Argerich Foundation 2023

Many competitions … From the graph on the opposite page, it can be seen that there was a strong increase of competitions until the year 2002. It looks like an exponential growth. People spoke of an explosion of competitions. The peak was reached in 2002: in that year not less than 336 international piano competitions (for solo pianists) took place*. Interestingly, after 2002, the amount of competitions decreased and lingered around 300 for many years. An explanation for this could be a certain level of saturation and also the effect of the economical crisis. However, in 2017, a large amount of new competitions emerged and the number suddenly jumped to a new record of nearly 350 international piano competitions taking place within that same year. Since not all competitions are annual, the total number of existing international piano competitions is much higher. It is a fair estimate that there are at the moment more than 1100 international piano competitions worldwide. With some 340 competitions being held within a year, one might think that there are also 340 first prize winners. Actually, this number lies again higher. Although the first prize is not always awarded, there are also quite a few competitions that employ various age categories, especially in France and Italy. Each of these age groups can produce several winners. There has even been an international piano competition with 26 different categories each year! Competitions in Asia can also have many classes (more than 30!) at different levels. Even more prize winners With so many competitions, the pianists have ample choice to enter the event which they consider the most attractive or the best suited, in terms of dates, location and repertoire. In 2009, there was a pianist who managed to take part in 16 international competitions within that year. The total number of applications was even higher. In 2020, the number of competitions dropped dramatically, as more than 160 competitions were cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis. It is surprising that more than 150 could still be held. Many of these, however, were online competitions. Already one year later (2021), there were altogether more than 285 international piano competitions being held again. With the sudden rise of online and hybrid competitions, pianists have still more opportunities to apply. They send their best recordings to different places. This is not necessarily a positive development. Some remarks and observations on pages 34-36. *: these numbers are based on the research Gustav Alink did all over the world, focusing on the international competitions. There might still be other competitions that have been overlooked, in which case the numbers are even higher. Ample choice Peak

2022

In 2022, there have been quite a few remarkable achievements in the musical world. Fortunately, the corona pandemic somewhat receded, making international travelling possible again without too many complications. Most of the international piano competitions that had been planned, could take place and - much to the organisers’ delight - the number of applicants was high up again! In March, the competition in Hilton Head (SC, USA) was won by Jaeden Izik-Dzurko from Canada. Two weeks later, he was in Barcelona, where he won the Maria Canals Competition. In August he went on to win the 20 th Santander Int’l Piano Competition! An amazing row of successes for this young pianist. Multiple victories also for Japanese pianist Yukine Kuroki: she won Dublin as well as the Liszt Utrecht! Japanese pianists were particularly successful in 2022: in not less than 16 international piano competitions, the first prize was awarded to a pianist from this country. At the Edvard Grieg competition in Bergen (Norway), the victory went to Fuko Ishii, while in Ettlingen the top category was won by Rei Harada. In June, Yunchan Lim from Korea made history by winning the 16 th Cliburn Competition with a dazzling performance of Rach 3. Anna Geniushene and Dmytro Choni were the two runners-up, demonstrating that nationalities do not and should not matter at international music competitions, where aspiring young professional musicians from all over the world come together, aiming at further recognition and making another important step in their individual careers. In July, the brand new Samson François competition in the south of France had an excellent first edition. A few days later, the 23 rd Bach competition in Leipzig was held. The Busoni competition set a new record by receiving 589 applications! After a thorough screening, 110 of them were selected for the “glocal” competition: making a recording to be evaluated by an international jury in November, after which 35 pianists were admitted to the final phase. The piano festival/competition in Rio de Janeiro, which had originally been scheduled for April, took place in September. It was dedicated to the memory of Nelson Freire. The Mozart competition in Zhuhai (China) could not take place in presence, but was carried out online. The Hong Kong IPC had an extraordinary edition by having all contestants perform live at the Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt (Austria), while each performance was streamed in the highest possible quality to the concert hall in Hong Kong. The juries in both places came to a joint verdict and announced Jonas Stark as the winner. At the same time, the competition in Geneva, the Honens in Calgary and the Olga Kern competition in Albuquerque were taking place. Geneva was won by 17-year old Kevin Chen who had also won in Budapest (2021). Illia Ovcharenko became the Honens laureate after having won the New York IPC as well plus three more first prizes in 2021. In November, the Marguerite Long Competition was back again under a new management. Hyuk Lee shared the first prize with Masaya Kamei.

2023

What will the year 2023 bring? Naturally, we hope that there will be no war any more and that people can live together more peacefully. In musical respect, many wonderful events have been scheduled for this year. We can look forward to several major competitions and some other very special ones that can also be very exciting and deliver great winners! In February, the 5 th Takamatsu Int’l Piano Competition will be held in Japan, which was postponed from last year. February/March, the new Ljubljana Festival International Piano Competition will be held, offering a 30,000 euro first prize. Twenty-eight pianists have been selected to compete. Before it finishes, the competition in Århus (Denmark) starts, where exceptionally gifted young talents have been awarded in the past years (Beatrice Rana, Philip Scheucher, Davit Khrikuli, J J Jun Li Bui …). In March, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition will be held live again in Tel Aviv: a great event, lasting almost three weeks! Eleven jury members will evaluate the performance of the 39 selected participants. Most of them already won top prizes in other major competitions. The end of March, a new Scarlatti competition will be held in Trapani (Italy), overlapping with the competition for the Premio Schumann in Lamporecchio. Many young pianists have applied for the new competition in Kronberg (Germany). In April, a very special edition of the Horowitz competition will be held in Geneva. In Orléans, young pianists can demonstrate how good they are with their interpretations of 20 th & 21 st Century repertoire. The beginning of May, the first phase of the FVG competition in Sacile (Italy) will be held. One week later, the Hans von Bülow competition in Meiningen (Germany) offers pianists the opportunity to be soloist and conductor in a piano concerto by Beethoven, Mozart or Bach. In Murcia (Spain), pianists are encouraged to play a piano concerto which is not often heard: by Czerny, Medtner, Respighi or Tchaikovsky #2 (with 2 nd piano accompaniment). In July, the Polish Music Competition in Rzeszów can be very interesting, while at the other side of our planet, 32 pianists will compete in Sydney to win one or several of the many substantial awards (total prize pool more than AUD 236,000). At the same time, young pianists are welcomed at the junior competition in Cleveland. A few weeks later, the Thomas & Evon Cooper Competition in Oberlin (USA) is also staged again. In October, the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw offers pianists the opportunity to compete in the 2 nd int’l Chopin competition on period instruments. From 20 th October, the Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Competition will be held in Brescia (Italy). The end of October, the Naumburg Competition is open for pianists again. They can choose from a wide range of piano concertos for the finals. In China, the Mozart Competition in Zhuhai and the Concerto Competition in Shenzhen have been planned (Sept. & Nov.). December: who will win in Bonn ( Beethoven ), Manchester ( Mottram ) or Novi Sad ( Bajic )?

Disclaimer . Worldwide, more than 1100 international piano competitions exist. AAF monitors most of them and has extensive documentation about them. This catalogue focuses on the 194 AAF member competitions and organisations and contains an enormous amount of details. While utmost care has been taken to present accurate information in this catalogue, AAF cannot assume responsibility for any inconvenience caused by ill-reading, mistake, unfortunate formulation or omission. Neither can AAF be held responsible for the content of the individual competition pages. Especially in these uncertain times, there are frequently changes and it will therefore happen that some of the details are no longer valid. As this is a digital publication, updates and corrections can be made relatively easily. On page 14, there are links to the complete lists of updates that have been made since this year’s catalogue came out. While we try to keep this catalogue as up-to-date as possible, the reader may also check AAF’s website for latest news and announcements: www.alink-argerich.org (updated every week). AAF’s website also informs about other piano competitions, not necessarily affiliated with AAF. N.B. Competition organisers sometimes decide to extend the application deadline, hoping for more pianists to apply. This is then usually announced at the last moment, so it is advisable to double-check the websites. Naturally, one should never count on this and always try to apply well on time. The organisers will appreciate it. At some competitions, two application deadlines are set (and even mentioned in the rules). Pianists who apply after the first deadline, are required to pay an additional “late application fee” (or “late processing fee” ). Other competitions try to stimulate pianists to apply earlier by mentioning a special “early-bird” deadline. The dates may also be different for applying online or by post. The Santa Cecilia Competition in Porto (Portugal) as well as Meiningen and Orbetello (Italy) handle two different application deadlines: candidates for the main competition must apply earlier than the ones who wish to take part in one of the junior categories. This has to do with the preselection phase. NB: a few competitions require the pianists who have successfully passed the preliminary round, to apply or register again for the final stage. This is specially seen at competitions where the preliminary round is held online.

Competition calendars

On the next pages, competition calendars are given for the years 2023, 2024 and 2025. Application deadlines and age limits for contestants have been added. The age limits refer to the main competition or the highest category. In a few cases, there is a main division for pianists aged between 18 and 32, for example, and other categories, in which younger, but also older pianists may take part. In these cases, “all ages” has been written in the calendar. Y : indicates a special focus on (very) young pianists (see the special pages for juniors) +Y : indicates an additional category (categories) with lower age limits. In these cases, the number of categories has also been stated; - these competitions with a special focus on junior pianists have been singled out and grouped together on pages 29-31, where the age brackets for all the different categories can be seen more clearly; - sometimes, the competition is part of a festival. If participation in the entire festival (or master classes) is not mandatory, the period of the piano competition might be shorter; - at some competitions participants for the main competition (or senior category) may arrive later than participants in the junior categories; - in some cases, the dates of a competition may still change. Every effort has been made to have all information as correct as possible at the time of publication; ~: whenever a tilde (‘~’) appears, precise dates or age limits were not known or unsure at the time of publication; the information was derived from the previous event; NB when the competition was postponed and the pianists who may take part have already been selected, the age limits may also have slightly changed; online competition. Some period has been indicated. (see also pages 34-35); - the calendars for 2024 and 2025 list competitions that are expected to be held, based on their frequency, but it may very well happen that a competition is rescheduled.

AAF’s website is frequently updated. www.alink-argerich.org

There, the competition calendars can also be found: in clear diagrams for each month, where it can readily be seen which competitions overlap and in which region of the world they are taking place, but also as a list in a PDF which can easily be downloaded.
