Concerto Repertoire
Concertos form an important part of the repertoire at major competitions. A great pianist may win a competition with a moving interpretation of "Beethoven #4" , while another pianist is hailed by the audience after a dazzling performance of "Rach 3" . Sometimes, a competition offers the opportunity to perform a less well-known work for piano and orchestra. Pancho Vladigerov ’s 4 th piano concerto is on the list for the Vladigerov Competition in Sofia. In Bydgoszcz (Poland) at the Paderewski Competition, the finalists may prepare one of Paderewski ’s works for piano and orchestra or perform Szymanowski . For the Iturbi Competition in Valencia (Spain), the concertos by Britten , Palau , Rodrigo and Richard Strauss (Burlesque) can be chosen. At the CLAMO competition in Murcia (Spain), Medtner , Bortkiewicz , Moszkowski and Rachmaninoff’s 2 nd Symphony , arranged by Warenberg for piano and orchestra, are listed [to be performed with 2 nd piano accompaniment] . At a few competitions, a specific concerto is compulsory , to be performed by all finalists: in Boston, but also in Weimar, Collioure and at the Piano Campus competition in Pontoise. Two concertos (or even more ...) At some competitions, two concertos have to be performed. It is then mostly a Mozart concerto and a Romantic concerto. Sometimes, two concertos must be prepared of which the jury (Bonn, Cleveland, IGPA ) or the finalists themselves ( Grieg Bergen) will choose one. At the Cliburn and also in Sendai, three concertos are performed. Any concerto In Montreal, Dallas and for the Odyssiad and GOCAA competitions, any piano concerto may be prepared. In Brussels at the Queen Elisabeth competition, the Cliburn and at the Honens Competition (Calgary), contestants have a free choice of their second concerto for the finals. Table of concertos Usually, the choice of piano concertos is more restricted. On page 57, the piano concertos are listed which may be performed in the AAF member competitions. The tables on pages 52-56 specify which choice the contestants have. If a competition has several age groups, it might be that the finalists in the younger age categories may also play with orchestra (Weimar, Zhuhai, …). Only the top category has been covered in the table.
