Concerto Repertoire

Concertos form an important part of the repertoire at major competitions. A great pianist may win a competition with a splendid interpretation of "Beethoven #4" , while another pianist is hailed by the audience after a dazzling performance of "Rach 3" . Sometimes, a competition offers the opportunity to perform a less well-known work for piano and orchestra, as in Murcia (Spain), where Albeniz, Respighi and César Franck’s 2 nd piano concerto are on the list as well as Czerny and Moscheles (#3). At other competitions, contestants may perform Gershwin . In Santander, De Falla ’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain may be played. In Darmstadt, the finalists can choose Chopin’s Krakowiak or Fantasy for piano and orchestra. At the Grieg Competition in Bergen the piano concerto by Harald Saeverud is on the list. Liszt’s version of Schubert’s Wanderer Fantasy is compulsory for the 2022 Schubert edition of the Liszt Utrecht Competition in the Netherlands. At a few competitions, a specific concerto is compulsory , to be performed by all finalists. This is the case at the Piano Campus Competition in Pontoise. Two concertos (and even more …) At some competitions, two concertos have to be performed. It is then mostly a Mozart concerto and another, Romantic concerto. Sometimes, two concertos must be prepared of which the jury (Dublin, Bolzano) or the finalists themselves ( Grieg Bergen) will choose one. Those who applied for Sydney or the Antonio Mormone Competition last year, had to have five concertos on their list. Any concerto In Sydney, but also in Montreal (before these were adjusted due the coronavirus crisis), Ferrol (Spain), at the Honens Competition and the Odyssiad and GOCAA competitions, any piano concerto may be performed. Also in Brussels, at the Queen Elisabeth competition, and the Rachmaninoff in Moscow, contestants have a free choice of their second concerto for the finals. Table of concertos Usually, the choice of piano concertos is more restricted. On page 53, the piano concertos are listed which may be performed in the AAF member competitions. The tables on pages 48-52 specify which choice the contestants have. If a competition has several age groups, it might be that the finalists in the younger age categories may also play with orchestra (Salt Lake City, Weimar, Zhuhai, …). Only the top category has been covered in the table.
