The Alink-Argerich Foundation was founded in November 1999. It grew from research Gustav Alink had done on Piano Competitions worldwide since the early 1980s, while Martha Argerich has always been keenly interested in assisting young musical talent.

AAF gathers and diffuses important facts, competition results, announcements and other news items as well as unique pictures through its web site: www.alink-argerich.org

Preface The fact that the pandemic continued throughout the year 2021 caused much frustration. Having already lasted for two years, it has had a huge impact on our lives and societies. Also the competition organisers had to adjust to the constantly changing situation in the world and the restrictions imposed by governments. In 2021, more events could take place than in 2020, but our endurance is still being tested, as mutants of the virus continue to plague us. We all hope that this pandemic will soon be better under control.

In spite of all hardship, we must stay optimistic. Music remains important. Making music and listening to music gives comfort and can heal. Competitions provide a platform and opportunities for musicians. They will always exist. Some competitions are discontinued, but in other places new ones emerge. This new edition of the AAF e-catalogue has been fully revised and updated for the year 2022. It contains again a lot of useful details about many international piano competitions worldwide. As can be seen from the competition pages in the second section of this e catalogue, there is a large variety: major competitions that have a lot to offer and smaller events which are also frequented by many pianists. Each event has its own characteristics. Taking part always brings valuable experience. There are more and more online and ‘hybrid’ competitions. The rules and procedures have to be clear and transparency is particularly important (see pages 34-36). In this edition of our catalogue we have marked the online competitions with a small image of a video camera. It should be noted that there are also competitions which are only occasionally held online due to the circumstances and temporary restrictions. It was truly a good idea to issue this catalogue as a digital publication. It is much better for the environment and it enables us and the competition organisers to make adjustments and updates at any time. Also last year, this was frequently done. On page 14, there will again be listings of all the changes and updates after this catalogue came out. Another great advantage is that there are many links in this catalogue: by clicking on a website address, the reader can easily jump to the corresponding website and can thus check the latest information there as well. In September 2022, the 2 nd AAF Conference will be held! We are very grateful to the Liszt Utrecht Competition for their collaboration in facilitating this unique gathering in their city. We are very much looking forward to it!

International Piano Competitions Worldwide

The following graph shows how many international piano competitions have taken place within a given year.

* the very first international piano competition was the Anton Rubinstein Competition in St. Petersburg, 1890. It was held five times at five-year intervals (and in different cities). * only those competitions have been counted which are international and which are open for piano. Competitions that have various age categories have been counted as one. * amateur competitions have not been included. Neither have 'mixed' competitions been included (where pianists compete against other instrumentalists or singers).

Alink-Argerich Foundation 2022

Many competitions … From the graph on the opposite page, it can be seen that there was a strong increase of competitions until the year 2002. It looks like an exponential growth. People spoke of an explosion of competitions. The peak was reached in 2002: in that year not less than 336 international piano competitions (for solo pianists) took place*. Interestingly, after 2002, the amount of competitions decreased and lingered around 300 for many years. An explanation for this could be a certain level of saturation and also the effect of the economical crisis. However, in 2017, a large amount of new competitions emerged and the number suddenly jumped to a new record of nearly 350 international piano competitions taking place within that same year. Since not all competitions are annual, the total number of existing international piano competitions is much higher. It is a fair estimate that there are at the moment more than 900 international piano competitions worldwide. With some 340 competitions being held within a year, one might think that there are also 340 first prize winners. Actually, this number lies again higher. Although the first prize is not always awarded, there are also quite a few competitions that employ various age categories, especially in France and Italy. Each of these age groups can produce several winners. There has even been an international piano competition with 26 different categories each year! Competitions in Asia can also have many classes (more than 30!) at different levels. Even more prize winners With so many competitions, the pianists have ample choice to enter the event which they consider the most attractive or the best suited, in terms of dates, location and repertoire. In 2009, there was a pianist who managed to take part in 16 international competitions within that year. The total number of applications was even higher. In 2020, the number of competitions dropped dramatically, as more than 160 competitions were cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis. It is surprising that more than 150 could still be held. Many of these, however, were online competitions. Already one year later (2021), there were altogether more than 285 international piano competitions being held again. With the sudden rise of online and hybrid competitions, pianists have still more opportunities to apply. They send their best recordings to different places. This is not necessarily a positive development. Some remarks and observations on pages 34-36. *: these numbers are based on the research Gustav Alink did all over the world, focusing on the international competitions. There might still be other competitions that have been overlooked, in which case the numbers are even higher. Peak Ample choice

Alink-Argerich Foundation 2022

2021

Due to the ongoing pandemic several competitions were cancelled (again) in 2021, though not as many as in 2020. They were postponed to 2022 or kept their original schedule and skipped the 2021 edition (such as the competitions in Århus and Hamamatsu which will return in 2023 and 2024 respectively). Quite a few other competitions changed their format and were held online, or resorted to a hybrid form, having the first round online and a much smaller group of contestants perform live in the semi-finals or finals. At some competitions, the jury were partly present, partly judging online. This hybrid form was applied by the Arthur Rubinstein competition in Tel-Aviv. The finals were held live. Juan Pérez Floristán was declared the winner and took home many of the special prizes as well. (In 2015, he had also won the competition in Santander.) In April, the competition in Jaén (Spain) was held entirely live. This competition has a long history: it has been held annually for more than 60 years. Interestingly, in 2021 it received a record number of applicants: 89! Also other major competitions saw a substantial increase in the number of applicants. It shows how eager the pianists were, to perform live during the pandemic. At first, online competitions attracted many pianists, but then, their interest seemed to fade. In May 2021, it was wonderful that the Queen Elisabeth competition in Brussels could still take place, though without audience, which creates of course a totally different atmosphere. Jonathan Fournel came forth as the 1 st prize winner. Partly overlapping with Brussels, the competition in Montreal was held, though entirely online. It thus happened that six pianists, including Su Yeon Kim and Dmitry Sin, were competing online in Montreal and at the same time live in Brussels. Su Yeon won in Montreal, while Dmitry became laureat in Brussels. In May/June, the Géza Anda Competition was held in Zürich and won by Anton Gerzenberg. In July, a special online edition of the Sydney Competition was organised: all stages were streamed and the results were announced as if it concerned a live event. Winner was Alexander Gadjiev (who had also won Hamamatsu in 2018). In Summer, the effects of covid-19 seemed a bit less severe and the competitions in Barcelona, Bremen, Porto and other European cities could take place. During two weeks in July, the live auditions for the Chopin Competition in Warsaw were also held. The Cleveland Competition was held in a hybrid form and the victory went to Martín García García. In August, the final phase of the Busoni Competition was held in Bolzano, and in September the competitions in Leeds, Budapest and Dortmund took place. During three weeks in October, the famous Chopin Competition was celebrated in Warsaw, with all 87 participants, 17 jury members and a full audience! It was a musical event at the highest level, with superb quality streaming of all performances. Bruce Liu from Canada was the glorious winner among many other outstanding pianists and young musical talents in this competition. Gadjiev and García García were also recipients of top prizes again. Meanwhile, the Beethoven Competition in Vienna was won by Aris Alexander Blettenberg. A Bösendorfer Grand Piano was part of his prize package. In Bratislava, the Hummel Competition could just be concluded before another lockdown was imposed. Hans Suh took first prize of the Telekom Beethoven Competition in Bonn.

2022

What will the year 2022 bring to us …? Naturally, we all hope that the vaccines will be effective against the coronavirus and that this, together with all the necessary precautions in the various countries, will gradually result in our return to a more normal life. However, this may still take quite some time. Until then, we will have to live with some restrictions and all related inconveniences. There will be many important and interesting piano competitions in 2022. Let’s hope that the concert halls may open! In June, the 16 th Cliburn Competition will take place in Fort Worth (Texas, USA), for which 388 aspiring pianists applied. The jury, chaired by conductor Marin Alsop, has some new names. At the same time, the competition in Sendai (Japan) is being held and an international piano competition in Honolulu (Hawai)! Also in June 2022, a brandnew Rachmaninoff Competition is launched in Moscow, open for pianists, conductors and composers, in anticipation of the 150 th anniversary of his birth in 2023. In February 2022, Amsterdam will have the inauguration of the European edition of the YPF Piano Competition Grand Prix Youri Egorov . In March, the competition in Epinal (France) will continue, after having had the 1 st round online in 2021. Hopefully, Japan will be more open to foreign visitors, so that the competition in Takamatsu can take place as planned (second half of March). Meanwhile in Europe, the 67 th edition of the Maria Canals Competition will be held in Barcelona (March/April). It overlaps with the 20 th and 21 st Century Music Competition in Orléans (France) and the Schumann Competition in Lamporecchio (Italy). The end of April, 10 selected pianists are invited to take part in the International Piano Festival in Rio de Janeiro, specially dedicated to Nelson Freire. The first week of May, pianists of all ages can compete with entirely free choice of repertoire in Ferrol (Spain). A bit later in May, the competition in Dublin promises to be a festive event with 67 pianists who already passed the preselection. In July/August, Santander (Spain) will celebrate the 20 th edition of the international piano competition, founded by Paloma O’Shea in 1974. During the 2 nd week of August, the well known competition for young pianists in Ettlingen will return with several new jury members. The end of August, the Grieg Competition takes place in Bergen (Norway). September also looks busy with the ARD Competition in Munich, the Casagrande Competition in Terni (Italy), Mozart for Young Musicians in Zhuhai (China) and the final phase of the Enescu Competition in Bucharest. This month, the 2 nd international AAF Conference will be held in Utrecht (Netherlands) in conjunction with the Liszt Utrecht Festival/Competition. In October, selected pianists will compete in Tbilisi, Hong Kong, Helsinki ( Maj Lind ) and Geneva. Before the year is over, the “Glocal” competition is organised as first phase of the Busoni Competition in Bolzano, and we will know the winner of the Honens in Calgary, and the results of the Paderewski Competition in Bydgoszcz and Shenzhen (China).

○ the competition focuses on (very) young pianists - age limit not higher than 22 .  apart from a main competition for the more adult pianists, the organisers also arrange contests or divisions for younger pianists, with lower age limits. (They may be held in the same time period, but may also occur separately or in alternating years, e.g. Weimar, Hilton Head, Salt Lake City.) □ this competition has no page in the current edition of the AAF catalogue. *¹ in 2021, this competition was held in Zhuhai (China) and is listed there. *² in 2021, this competition was held in Bangkok, but will move to Kuala Lumpur in 2022. this is an online competition: the participants must submit a video recording of their performance. NB a few competition pages have not yet been updated. We hope to receive them soon.

Disclaimer . Worldwide, more than 900 international piano competitions exist. AAF monitors most of them and has extensive documentation about them. This catalogue focuses on the 190 AAF member competitions and organisations and contains an enormous amount of details. While utmost care has been taken to present accurate information in this catalogue, AAF cannot assume responsibility for any inconvenience caused by ill-reading, mistake, unfortunate formulation or omission. Neither can AAF be held responsible for the content of the individual competition pages. Especially in these uncertain times, there are frequently changes and it will therefore happen that some of the details are no longer valid. As this is a digital publication, updates and corrections can be made relatively easily. On page 14, there are links to the complete lists of updates that have been made since this year’s catalogue came out. While we try to keep this catalogue as up-to-date as possible, the reader may also check AAF’s website for latest news and announcements: www.alink-argerich.org (updated every week). AAF’s website also informs about other piano competitions, not necessarily affiliated with AAF. For additional information, assistance or complaints, feel free to contact AAF at any time (mail@alink-argerich.org or aafout@yahoo.com).

N.B. Competition organisers sometimes decide to extend the application deadline, hoping for more pianists to apply. This is then usually announced at the last moment, so it is advisable to double-check the websites. Naturally, one should never count on this and always try to apply well on time. The organisers will appreciate it. At some competitions, two application deadlines are set (and even mentioned in the rules). Pianists who apply after the first deadline, are required to pay an additional “late application fee” (or “late processing fee” ). Other competitions try to stimulate pianists to apply earlier by mentioning a special “early-bird” deadline. The dates may also be different for applying online or by post. The Santa Cecilia Competition in Porto (Portugal) as well as Verona (Italy) handle two different application deadlines: candidates for the main competition must apply earlier than the ones who wish to take part in one of the junior categories. This has to do with the preselection phase (and the online format). NB: a few competitions require the pianists who have successfully passed the preliminary round, to apply or register again for the final stage. This is specially seen at competitions where the preliminary round is held online.

Competition calendars

On the next pages, competition calendars are given for the years 2022, 2023 and 2024. Application deadlines and age limits for contestants have been added. The age limits refer to the main competition or the highest category. In a few cases, there is a main division for pianists aged between 18 and 32, for example, and other categories, in which younger, but also older pianists may take part. In these cases, “all ages” has been written in the calendar. Y : indicates a special focus on (very) young pianists (see the special pages for juniors) +Y : indicates an additional category (categories) with lower age limits. In these cases, the number of categories has also been stated; - these competitions with a special focus on junior pianists have been singled out and grouped together on pages 29-31, where the age brackets for all the different categories can be seen more clearly; - sometimes, the competition is part of a festival. If participation in the entire festival (or master classes) is not mandatory, the period of the piano competition might be shorter; - at some competitions participants for the main competition (or senior category) may arrive later than participants in the junior categories; - in this time of uncertainty, the dates of a competition may still change. Every effort has been made to have the information in these calendars as correct as possible at the time of publication; ~: whenever a tilde (‘~’) appears, precise dates or age limits were not known or unsure at the time of publication; the information was derived from the previous event; NB when the competition was postponed and the pianists who may take part have already been selected, the age limits may also have slightly changed; online competition. Some period is mostly indicated. (see also pages 34-35); - the calendars for 2023 and 2024 list competitions that are expected to be held, based on their frequency, but it may very well happen that a competition is rescheduled.

AAF’s website is frequently updated. www.alink-argerich.org

There, the competition calendars can also be found: in clear diagrams for each month, where it can readily be seen which competitions overlap and in which region of the world they are taking place, but also as a list in a PDF which can easily be downloaded.
