*: mostly, a time period is added, during which no official teaching relationship may have taken place, e.g. “not during the past two years before the start of the competition” . As can be seen, a few competitions entirely rule out any teaching relation, at present or in the past. **: at the Telekom Beethoven Competition in Bonn, current students of jury members may not apply and neither those, who have been pupils of a jury member for at least one year during the three years preceding the competition. NB: occasional attendance of Master Classes is usually allowed, but there may be an additional rule: ***: after acceptance into the competition, no master class is allowed with any of the jury members. The Arcangelo Speranza Competition in Taranto (Italy) states: “a person may not be on the jury if one of his students is among the participants” , thus ruling out a potential jury member rather than participants. At the Isidor Bajić Competition in Novi Sad, pianists are barred from participation when they had any sort of pedagogical contact with more than three members of the jury. Publishing all votes There is total transparency when the organisers publish all the points or votes by the jury, after the competition has finished. People might object by saying that this exposes the individual jury members too much and that it can be harmful for the unsuccessful participants. Yet, much can be said in favour of publishing all the points: it gives a lot of insight, enhances transparency and it stimulates the jury members to think twice about their judgment (as an organiser once remarked), and it is also educational in many ways: one can learn a lot and make one’s own analyses. It can also take away the suspicion people may have about any conspiracy or manipulation and can prevent endless rumours that might otherwise be quite harmful to the reputation and image of the competition and the organisers. Thinking of the large interest and of modern time, in which everything is opening up and people are demanding more transparency in all areas of important activity, there are indeed stronger arguments in favour than against. To protect the jury members, a few competitions
publish the votes without specifying the names of the jury members. The jury votes have been/will be published by the following competitions: (including several that are currently not affiliated with AAF)
