Preface We are momentarily living in a turbulent world, plagued by awful conflicts and a dramatic climate change. Yet, perhaps even especially under these heavy circumstances, the presence of Classical Music is truly wonderful. It can give much comfort and some relief. Since the Covid-19 pandemic has somewhat subdued, it is a real delight to see that the concert halls are being filled with people again, who are fully enjoying the musical performances!

For too long, many of us (in the audience as well as on stage) had missed the wonderful experience of hearing and making live music. We can see this revival also in the world of music competitions. Many competitions are taking place again, attracting large numbers of applicants. It is astonishing to see that there are now even several competitions offering an incredibly high amount of money for the first prize. Not all competitions have such enormous budget. They are all trying their best and announce the total amount of prizes and awards, while some of them mention the value of certain scholarships or special services such as the production of a CD or the opportunity to have a masterclass (e.g. with the competition organiser), to take part in a festival or to have the privilege of being directly admitted to another competition without going through the preselection. It can also be seen that some competitions add the promised fee for one or several concerts to the prize money. A few competitions invite the first prize winner to serve on the jury at the next edition the competition. There has become quite a variety of the prize package, making it more difficult to compare the competitions. As it always has been one of AAF’s main aims to provide clear and objective information about the competitions, it will be a good step for AAF to look closer into this diversity of prizes and awards and to publish a better specification. This will be useful for all organisers and participants and will enhance transparency. This year, several competitions will be celebrating a special anniversary for having been in existence for 10, 20, 25, 30 or even 50 years! In the latter category are Cleveland and the Palma d’Oro competition in Finale Ligure (Italy). AAF will turn 25 this year! It is a true pleasure and honour that Piano Cleveland will host the 3 rd AAF Conference during their competition in August. Important topics will be discussed and it will be again a unique opportunity to meet other colleagues from the Piano World. (see also page 63) We look forward very much to seeing you there!

International Piano Competitions Worldwide The following graph shows how many international piano competitions have taken place within a given year.

* the very first international piano competition was the Anton Rubinstein Competition in St. Petersburg, 1890. It was held five times at five-year intervals (and in different cities). * only those competitions have been counted which are international and which are open for piano. Competitions that have various age categories have been counted as one. * amateur competitions have not been included. Neither have 'mixed' competitions been included (where pianists compete against other instrumentalists or singers).

Many competitions … From the graph on the opposite page, it can be seen that there was a strong increase of competitions until the year 2002. It looks like an exponential growth. People spoke of an explosion of competitions. The peak was reached in 2002: in that year not less than 336 international piano competitions (for solo pianists) took place*. Interestingly, after 2002, the amount of competitions decreased and lingered around 300 for many years. An explanation for this could be a certain level of saturation and also the effect of the economical crisis. However, in 2017, a large amount of new competitions emerged and the number suddenly jumped to a new record of more than 350 international piano competitions taking place within that same year. In 2020, the number of competitions dropped dramatically, as more than 160 competitions were cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis. It is surprising that more than 180 could still be held. Many of these, however, were online competitions. Already one year later (2021), altogether more than 270 international piano competitions took place again. Since not all competitions are annual, the total number of existing international piano competitions is much higher. It is a fair estimate that there are at the moment more than 1100 international piano competitions worldwide. With some 300 competitions being held within a year, one might think that there are also 300 first prize winners. Actually, this number lies again higher. Although the first prize is not always awarded, there are also quite a few competitions that employ various age categories, especially in France and Italy. Each of these age groups can produce several winners. There has even been an international piano competition with 26 different categories each year! Competitions in Asia can also have many classes (more than 30!) at different levels. Even more prize winners With so many competitions, the pianists have ample choice to enter the event which they consider the most attractive or the best suited, in terms of dates, location and repertoire. In 2023, there were two pianists who managed to take part in 17 international competitions within that year. The total number of applications was even higher. With the sudden rise of online and hybrid competitions, pianists have still more opportunities to apply. They send their best recordings to different places. This is not necessarily a positive development. Some remarks and observations on pages 34-36. *: these numbers are based on the research Gustav Alink did all over the world, focusing on the international competitions. There might still be other competitions that have been overlooked, in which case the numbers are even higher. Ample choice Peak

In 2023, there were many international piano competitions again, revealing and confirming several of the world’s most promising young pianists. Two of them managed to take part in 17 competitions within this year … In February, the 5 th Takamatsu Int’l Piano Competition was held, for which 245 pianists had applied. After four rounds, the 10 jury members awarded the first prize to Philipp Lynov. The next day, the inaugural Ljubljana Festival International Competition for Piano started. Six finalists performed with orchestra in the main hall of the Cankarjev dom which was filled with an enthousiastic audience. Kai-min Chang took the 30,000 Euro first prize, while Yuanfan Yang was the first runner-up. In 2023, several other new international piano competitions emerged, such as the ones in Hilversum (Netherlands), Trapani (Italy), Genthod (Switzerland), Cagnes-sur-Mer (France), Kronberg (Germany), the Madrid IPC (Spain), Chopin Nashville (USA) and the Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Competition in Brescia (Italy). The second half of March, the 17 th Arthur Rubinstein Competition took place. From the 39 selected pianists 32 came to Tel Aviv. After more than two weeks of great performances including chamber music and two concertos, Kevin Chan was declared the winner. In 2021 and 2022, he had also won the big competitions in Budapest and Geneva! A special Kyiv-Geneva edition of the Horowitz Competition was held in Geneva. Roman Fediurko won first prize and the audience prize. In June, the World Music Masters Competition in Monte Carlo (Monaco) had a special edition open for pianists and violinists (all of whom finalists of other international competitions). The piano competition was won by Aristo Sham. Meanhwile, the Aloha int’l piano competition was held in Honolulu. In July, the 2023 Sydney Competition was won by Jeonghwan Kim. At the same time, the Cleveland Young Artists competition was held for pianists up to 18 years of age. Elisey Mysin won the junior category and Sae-Hyun Kim the senior category. Elisey had also won the youngest category of the Schumann Competition in Düsseldorf in February. In October he competed in Nashville not in his own age category, but in the highest group (up to 22 years) where he also received the first prize! The special Sultanov award (US$ 20,000) was given to Kiron Atom Telian, who went six weeks later to Paris, ending up among the finalists of the Chopin edition of the Prix Animato. The top prize winners were 16 years old. The 64 th edition of the Busoni Competition had its final phase in August/September, which was won by Arsenii Mun by unanimous vote which had not happened in the past 28 years! The second international Chopin competition on period instruments in Warsaw was won by Eric Guo. In November the China Shenzhen int’l piano concerto competition was staged again after having been postponed several times due to covid. In December, the RNCM James Mottram competition in Manchester was won by Jung-Eun Kim. Both first prize and the audience award of the Telekom Beethoven Competition in Bonn went to Caleb Borick.

What does the year 2024 have in store for us? Naturally, we all hope that the world will be more peaceful. In musical respect, many wonderful events have been scheduled for this year. We can look forward to several major competitions and many other ones which can also be very exciting and deliver great winners! Already in January, two very interesting competitions are held: the UNISA competition in Pretoria and the Gurwitz in San Antonio (Texas, USA). Preselections were held for these competitions, after which 13 resp. 12 pianists were invited to compete. During three weeks in February, the Classic Piano competition takes place in Dubai, to which the top five winners of 14 international pre-competitions held in 2022/2023, will be admitted. Fifteen jury members have to decide which pianist may get the first prize of 150,000 Euros … In April, the 3 rd Jinji Lake international piano competition will be held in Suzhou (China), to which 30 pianists will be invited. The end of April, six pianists will travel to Sacile (Italy) to compete in the final phase of the FVG Competition. (The first phase was held in May 2023.) In May, the Montreal competition will be for pianists again! This competition offers substantial prizes and awards, totalling CAD 200,000! The 24 candidates were chosen from among 388 applicants. Two weeks later, the brandnew Borderland Chopin competition will be held in El Paso (Texas, USA). Actually, quite a few new international piano competitions will be launched in 2024, such as the ones in Málaga (Spain, June), Gabriela Weiss IPC in Mińsk Mazowiecki (Poland, July), the Blanca Uribe IPC in Ibagué Tolima (Colombia, October) and the international piano competition in Sorel-Tracy (Canada, October). Several of these competitions offer very attractive awards such as a 20,000 and even 25,000 Dollars first prize. The Gabriela Weiss competition is special for doing a preselection during which the adjudication panel will have no information at all about the contestants and will only judge the audio track of the submitted video recordings. In June, the 16 th Concours Géza Anda will take place in Zürich with Martha Argerich as one of the jury members, Mikhail Pletnev conducting the Mozart concertos and Paavo Järvi the finals. It overlaps with the Schumann Competition in Zwickau which is held only once in four years. Twenty-two pianists aged between 16 and 22 will be selected for the New York IPC where they all play four rounds without elimination and compete for the US$ 20,000 first prize. At the same time, the Gina Bachauer Artists Competition will take place in Salt Lake City. In August, both the Cleveland Piano competition and the Palma d’Oro competition in Finale Ligure (Italy) will celebrate their 50 th anniversary! Just before the finals, Cleveland will host the 3 rd AAF Conference. In September, the Leeds in England overlaps with the Enescu competition in Bucharest. In October, we see the revival of the Xiamen IPC, followed by the 12 th Hamamatsu competition in Japan in November.

N.B. Competition organisers sometimes decide to extend the application deadline, hoping for more pianists to apply. This is then usually announced at the last moment, so it is advisable to double-check the websites. Naturally, one should never count on this and always try to apply well on time. The organisers will appreciate it. At some competitions, two application deadlines are set (and even mentioned in the rules). Pianists who apply after the first deadline, are required to pay an additional “late application fee” (or “late processing fee” ). Other competitions try to stimulate pianists to apply earlier by mentioning a special “early-bird” deadline. The dates may also be different for applying online or by post. The Santa Cecilia Competition in Porto (Portugal) as well as Meiningen and Orbetello (Italy) handle two different application deadlines: candidates for the main competition must apply earlier than the ones who wish to take part in one of the junior categories. This has to do with the preselection phase. NB: a few competitions require the pianists who have successfully passed the preliminary round, to apply or register again for the final stage. This is specially seen at competitions where the preliminary round is held online.

Competition calendars

On the next pages, competition calendars are given for the years 2024, 2025 and 2026. Application deadlines and age limits for contestants have been added. The age limits refer to the main competition or the highest category. In a few cases, there is a main division for pianists aged between 18 and 32, for example, and other categories, in which younger, but also older pianists may take part. In these cases, “all ages” has been written in the calendar. Y : indicates a special focus on (very) young pianists (see the special pages for juniors) +Y : indicates an additional category (categories) with lower age limits. In these cases, the number of categories has also been stated; - these competitions with a special focus on junior pianists have been singled out and grouped together on pages 29-31, where the age brackets for all the different categories can be seen more clearly; - sometimes, the competition is part of a festival. If participation in the entire festival (or master classes) is not mandatory, the period of the piano competition might be shorter; - at some competitions participants for the main competition (or senior category) may arrive later than participants in the junior categories; - in some cases, the dates of a competition may still change. Every effort has been made to have all information as correct as possible at the time of publication; ~: whenever a tilde (‘~’) appears, precise dates or age limits were not known or unsure at the time of publication; the information was derived from the previous event; NB when the competition was postponed and the pianists who may take part have already been selected, the age limits may also have slightly changed; online competition. Some period has been indicated. (see also pages 34-35); - the calendars for 2025 and 2026 list competitions that are expected to be held, based on their frequency, but it may very well happen that a competition is rescheduled.
